1/5 Inch Graph Paper

1/5 inch graph paper has squares of 5.08 mm, 37 across and 50 down on US Letter, with every fifth line heavier to mark whole inches. It is the engineering-pad size, handy for scale drawings, sketches with measurements and tidy figure work in science and math notebooks.

Printing help

Use it when a drawing needs to hold a scale: pick one square as a convenient unit and the heavy lines let you count out larger distances without a ruler. Students can draw a floor plan in about twenty minutes and label each wall as they go. Print the header version for lab handouts. If you only need a quick sketch, press Write online and draw on screen, then clear it for the next idea.

Five squares to the inch is easy to scale in your head. One square can stand for 1 foot, 2 units or 5 millimeters, and a heavy line then means five of them. That makes it a good bridge between plain graphing and real technical drawing. Beginners tend to lose track of where a shape starts, so tell them to mark the corner squares first and count from the heavy lines rather than from one.

Keep Light for pencil sketches so the grid fades behind the drawing. Use Regular when the page will be scanned or copied, or if the draftsman is working in pen. Choose Landscape for wide floor plans or elevations. If the detail is too cramped, try Square size 1/4 inch for more space, or 1/8 inch if you need finer control.

How many squares are on a US Letter page?
Thirty-seven across and fifty down, each 5.08 mm. Every fifth line is heavier, so the heavy lines land one inch apart. Print at 100 percent so the squares keep that exact size.
What scale works well on this grid?
Because five squares make an inch, scales like 1 square = 1 foot, 1 square = 2 units or 1 inch = 5 units are simple to count. The heavy lines act as built-in tick marks, so you rarely need a separate ruler.
Is it the same as engineering paper?
The grid spacing is the one engineering pads use, with a heavier line every fifth square. It prints on plain paper without the green tint or the printed border, so you can add your own title block.
