Number Bonds to 10 Worksheets

Hand out twelve bonds as a ten minute task. Before writing, ask the child which circle is empty and whether to add or take away. Blue outline on the top circle marks the whole, so a young child can tell it apart. Check with the answer key, then ask them to say each bond as a sentence: 7 and 3 make 10. Reuse the page a week later with a new version.

Number bonds teach that a number can be split into parts and put back together. The same diagram covers addition when the whole is hidden and subtraction when a part is hidden, which is why it comes before fact families. Within 10, the aim is quick recall of pairs like 6 and 4 and 8 and 2. Where kids get stuck: they add the two visible numbers every time, even when one is the whole.

Whole up to 10 is the right start. When the pairs to 10 come quickly, set it to 20, and 100 is for children who are ready for two-digit work. Six problems makes a warm-up, twelve a full sheet. Reinforce with real objects: ten counters, split into two piles, then ask what is in the other pile.

How does my child know which circle is the whole?

The top circle has a blue outline and holds the total. The two below are the parts. Ask the child to point to the whole first, before they decide whether to add or subtract.

My child adds the two numbers even when the whole is shown. Why?

They have learned that bonds mean adding without reading the diagram. Have them point to the empty circle and say aloud whether it is the total or a part before writing anything.

Do number bonds replace learning addition facts?

They build them. Knowing 10 splits into 6 and 4 supports 6 + 4, 4 + 6, 10 − 4 and 10 − 6 all at once, so each bond covers a whole fact family.
