Letter B Handwriting Practice
Letter B is where many children first start mixing up left and right. This page gives tracing rows for B at three sizes, plus empty lines for writing it from memory. Parents and kindergarten teachers can use it as a short, focused session on one shape.
Manuscript letters, the first style taught.

About this page
Printing helpSay the recipe out loud as the pencil moves: a long line down, then go back to the top and make two bumps on the right. Have the child trace the biggest rows first, then the medium ones. Ask where the belly of the b sits, and have them point with a finger before writing. Keep the first sitting short. Return after lunch or the next morning for the empty rows.
B and d are the classic mirror pair. A child who learns the stick first and the bump after it, always on the right of the line for capital B, gets a built-in habit that settles the confusion. Lowercase b begins the same way, a tall line then a bump. A silly trick that helps is to bat and ball: the stick is the bat, the belly is the ball. Pairing with words such as bed and boy builds the sound.
Large rows work best at the start, because the two bumps need room to stay round instead of pointy. If the bumps become the same size, remind the child that the top one is a little smaller. Drop to Medium when both bumps meet the middle of the stick neatly. Printing a second copy for a b and d comparison on the fridge can settle doubt.
- How do I stop my child writing b backwards?
- Teach a fixed starting point: always the top of the stick, always down first. Then add the bump on the right. Chant it daily for a week. Most reversals clear up by age seven without any other fix.
- Is it normal for a six year old to still flip b and d?
- Yes, through about age seven it is common and not a sign of dyslexia on its own. If it continues past that with other reading struggles, mention it to the teacher or a specialist.
- Which B words suit a first writing attempt?
- Short, sounded-out ones: bat, bed, big, bus, box. They contain the stick-and-bump shape without long tails, and a child can draw a matching picture next to each word afterward.
