Letter C Handwriting Practice
C is one open curve and nothing else, so it makes a gentle first stop for toddlers moving up from scribbles. Use these letter C tracing rows with preschoolers who are ready for a shape that starts at the top right and swings around.

About this page
Printing helpDraw a big clock face in the air with a finger first. Then pick up the pencil and trace from the starting dot, swing left, around the bottom and stop before closing. Three or four traced C shapes make one good turn. Because C has no corners, children can fill a whole row quickly. Let them draw eyes inside a few to make cookies or caterpillars.
The skill here is the counterclockwise turn. Letters c, o, a, d, g and q all start with that same motion, so a child who learns it on C has a head start on six others. The common error is closing the C into an O, or starting at the bottom. Capital and lowercase C differ only in size, which makes it one of the few letters where practice carries over directly.
Pick Large for a child who tends to flatten the curve into a squarish shape. If the opening of the C keeps wandering shut, move down to Medium and ask the child to leave a gap wide enough for a thumb. Because C and G share a start, G is the natural next page. Do a short C row before an O row, as warm-up.
- Why does my child's C come out as a closed circle?
- They are drawing an O. Show that the C stops, and leave a small gap you can point at. A sticker or dot at the stopping place often works better than another reminder.
- Which direction should the pencil move for a C?
- Counterclockwise, starting near the top right, curving left, down and around to the bottom right. That is the same direction as the hands going backward on a clock face.
- Is C or K confusing for beginners because of the sound?
- Yes, c says both /k/ and /s/ in words like cat and city. Practice the letter shape first, and bring in word spelling once the child reads simple words.
