Letter F Handwriting Practice

F looks like E with the bottom arm missing, which is exactly how most children get it wrong. Here is a letter F page with rows to trace in three sizes and lines to write it alone, for kindergarten and early first grade.

Put a sticker at the top of the page and say a sentence such as: down from the top, then a long arm, then a short one. Trace the big row once with a pointer finger. Then use a pencil for the next row. Two sizes in one sitting is plenty. Look for a letter F in a magazine headline afterward. Fish, fox and fan make good drawings to finish the page.

Capital F is the E without a bottom arm. Children drop in the third bar almost by habit, and the middle bar often runs as long as the top. Lowercase f is the letter with the most unusual form for beginners: a tall hook that curves over at the top, with a crossbar through it, and it sits taller than most other letters. It is also one of the first letters that must go above the middle line.

For a child who keeps adding a bottom bar, stay on Large and cross out the extra with a light touch while saying two arms only. When the shape is stable, move to Medium. A second row of lowercase f later helps with ascender height. Cursive is a very different F, so hold off until print is secure.

How do I stop F turning into E?
Count the arms out loud: two, not three. Placing the bottom of the stick on the baseline with nothing branching off it makes the difference visible. A sticker at the end of the stick can mark where to stop.
At what age do children usually write F correctly?
Most manage the capital by about five, once E is solid. Lowercase f, with its hooked top and crossbar, often takes until six or seven to look tidy, so be patient.
Why is lowercase f taller than other letters?
It is an ascender, so it reaches up toward the top line, like b, d, h and k. A child who sees the top line as a goal will draw it more confidently.
