About this page
Printing helpSet aside one page and ten to fifteen minutes, because w takes longer than most letters. Trace the solid model slowly and count the two bumps before the exit. Work along the dashed and dotted copies, then fill the empty rows without looking. Stop at the first sign of tiredness. In a classroom it fits a center rotation, and at home it sits well next to a short copying task such as a sentence with water and window.
Lowercase w combines two undercurves with a bridge exit, and it has the longest joining stroke of the alphabet. That is why it often turns into a messy row of waves. Children lose count of the bumps, make the second hump taller, or let the exit sag to the baseline. Practice u first, since w grows out of it. After w, try short words such as went, wow and wave.
Choose Large first. The long stroke needs room, and extra height helps a child keep both bumps even. Medium suits students with a steady hand, and Small is for confident writers who want neat rows. As a variation, practice w and u back to back, one row of each, to feel the extra bump.
- Why is cursive w so hard to write neatly?
- It packs two bumps and a long exit into one letter, so small errors build up. Slow the stroke, match the bump heights to the model, and use Large lines until the shape holds.
- How is cursive w different from u?
- A w repeats the undercurve a second time and then leaves with a bridge exit that rises toward the next letter. A u stops after two curves and exits from the baseline, so w is the longer, wider shape.
- Should I practice w with a specific word list?
- Yes, after the single letter feels steady. Words like was, will, water and window let the child practice the exit into different letters, which is where most w problems show up.
