Cat Color by Number

Cat color by number turns a 12 by 12 grid into a hidden cat. Every square has a number, the legend names a color for each, and the cat appears as the grid fills in. It suits kids from about five to nine, and works for a rainy afternoon at home or a quiet center in class.

Printing help

Hand over crayons or markers and let the child work one number at a time: find every 3, color them all, then move on. Most kids need twenty to forty minutes, so it splits well across two sittings. Turn on the answer key if you want a finished cat to compare against, or hide it and let the cat be the reward. The Color online mode lets a child color on a tablet instead. Print the 5 versions for a class so neighbors read different grids.

With the Numbers mode, the skill is matching a printed digit to a legend entry and staying inside a small square. That is careful looking and fine motor control more than math. Kids slip when two similar colors, like orange and red, sit next to each other in the legend. Once that feels easy, switch the Mode to Addition, Subtraction or Multiplication and the same cat becomes a fact-practice sheet.

Keep Numbers for kindergarten and first grade, where reading the digits is the whole task. For a child who already knows addition facts, try Addition on the same cat so the picture feels familiar while the work changes. Press New version to get a fresh grid for a second try, since the numbers behind the cat change each time.

How do I know the cat is right while coloring?
Check a few squares against the legend as you go. The answer key shows the finished cat, so you can compare once the child is done or sneak a look when the shape seems off.
Can the cat sheet be used for math practice?
Yes. Choose Addition, Subtraction or Multiplication in Mode and each square holds a problem instead of a number. The child solves it, finds the answer in the legend, and colors that square the matching color.
What should a young child color with?
Crayons or washable markers work best because the squares are sized for them. Pencils are slow to fill a square and leave pale color. Chunky crayons suit ages four to six.
