Printing help

Print it, set out several colors and ask the child to read the legend at the top. Filling the grid takes about twenty to thirty minutes. A butterfly fits a life cycle unit, a garden theme or a spring display, and the wings can be cut out and hung from a window. Use the answer key to check the finished picture or keep it back for a reveal. Color online works on a tablet.

A butterfly has matching wings, so a correctly colored sheet has both sides alike, which gives the child a built-in check. If the left wing looks different from the right, a square has gone wrong. This links number reading, scanning and symmetry. In the math modes, each square carries a problem whose answer decides the color. Children often miss small cells near the body, so the edges need slow work.

Choose Numbers for the youngest, Addition or Subtraction for first through second grade, and Multiplication for fact practice. Tell the child to compare wings when finished. Press New version for different numbers. In a group, 5 versions prints a different sheet for each learner. Try coloring one wing, then asking the child to predict the other.

How can symmetry help me check the butterfly?
Compare the two wings. They should mirror each other, so a patch that appears on one side only points to a wrong square. Fold the page along the body, if you like, to compare.
Can I connect this page with a life cycle lesson?
Yes. Color the butterfly after discussing egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and adult. Mount it next to hand-drawn stages. The page then serves as the final stage of the cycle on a wall chart.
What if my child colors outside the squares?
Let it go for a younger child, since the picture still appears. For older children, use a sharpened pencil to outline each square first or switch to colored pencils for better control.
