Printing help

Print a page for each student and use it as a calm start to a Veterans Day lesson. Ten to fifteen minutes is usual for Medium. After solving, ask students to choose one word, such as DUTY or PEACE, and write a sentence or a thank-you note to a veteran they know. At home, a family can solve together and talk about relatives who served. The answer key is available, and the Solve online button works on a tablet.

The words describe values (HONOR, COURAGE, LOYALTY, RESPECT), symbols (FLAG, MEDAL) and actions (SERVE, SALUTE, REMEMBER, THANK). Children practice spelling vocabulary that appears in holiday readings. Longer words such as SACRIFICE and TRIBUTE are good prompts for a short explanation of what they mean. Younger readers may need help with words like VETERANS and COURAGE before they search. A thank-you letter or a short class discussion is the usual next step after the grid.

Easy at 10x10 uses short words like FLAG, HERO and HOPE, suited to kindergarten through second grade. Medium can place VALOR and UNITY on a diagonal, a stretch for students who read slowly across rows. Hard at 20x20 asks for backwards reading and terms such as SACRIFICE and DEFENSE. In My own words you can enter up to 30 names, for example local veterans a class will thank.

Is the puzzle suitable for young children?
Yes. The words are about values and symbols, such as FLAG, HERO, HOPE and CARE. Easy keeps it short, and you can pair it with a simple thank-you card.
Can students add the names of veterans they know?
Yes. Switch to My own words and enter up to 30 names or words. The grid is built from your list, and the answer key matches.
How can I use it in a respectful class discussion?
Have students pick a word like HONOR or SERVICE and say what it means to them. Keep the puzzle short so most of the time goes to conversation or writing.
