April Fools' Day Word Search

Slip it onto desks as the first activity on April 1, or pass it around at breakfast. Easy takes five minutes. Hard is a real challenge with words most adults would need to double check. Pick 5 versions so neighbors cannot copy, and use the answer key to check. On a phone or tablet, the on-screen version lets a student trace each word with a fingertip. The hard list is a vocabulary stretch: BUFFOONERY, SHENANIGANS, JOVIALITY, HILARITY. Few of these show up in everyday reading, so finding them letter by letter is how many children first meet them. Easy words such as GIGGLE and SILLY are for early readers. After solving, ask which words describe a person, which describe an action, and which are names for a trick. Reading the unfamiliar words aloud, with a guess at their meaning, makes the stretch worthwhile.

Easy, the youngest choice, keeps short words like JOKE and GRIN on 10x10 in two directions. Medium widens to 15x15 with diagonals and works for grades two to four. Are the hard words too difficult for elementary students?

Some are. Words like joviality and buffoonery stretch fifth graders. Third and fourth graders usually do better on medium, which sticks to words like JESTER, FUNNY and ANTICS.
