About this page
Printing helpPrint a card for every player and keep one call sheet for yourself. Read the words in the printed order and tick each box as you go. A 5 x 5 round with this list runs about ten to fifteen minutes, a 3 x 3 round closer to five. Beans, cereal or paper scraps work well as markers, and edible ones make a good prize for the winner. Switch on the answer key to get the call sheet, then use New version for a second round with fresh cards and a new call order.
Short words like PIE, JAM and EGG give beginning readers quick wins, while PANCAKE, SANDWICH and SPAGHETTI make them look at every letter and syllable. Players scan a card for a printed word and match it to what they hear, which builds sight-word speed. Younger children often confuse look-alikes such as CORN and CAKE, or JUICE and JAM, so call slowly at first. Older learners can spell each word aloud before marking it, or name a food group it belongs to.
For first graders or an English-language class, choose the 3 x 3 grid and one card per page so each square is big and easy to read. For a mixed group, 5 x 5 with the free center keeps the game moving. Two cards per page saves paper for a party. Paste your own words, such as a class menu or a unit vocabulary list, to replace the 32 food words.
- Are the food words readable for a first grader?
- Many are: PIE, JAM, EGG, MILK and SOUP have three or four letters. A few, like SPAGHETTI and BROCCOLI, are long. Use a 3 x 3 card and call the long words slowly, or paste a shorter list of your own.
- Can I make food bingo about one meal, like breakfast?
- Yes. Paste only the breakfast words you want, such as EGG, MILK, BREAD, HONEY and PANCAKE, into the words box. You need at least eight for a 3 x 3 card and 24 for a full 5 x 5.
- How do I check a winner in food bingo?
- Ask the player to read back the marked words. Compare them with the ticks on your call sheet. Every marked word must already be ticked, and the free center counts as marked when it is switched on.
