Colors Bingo Cards

Colors bingo cards drawing on 38 color names, from RED and TAN to MAGENTA, LAVENDER and CHARTREUSE. They work for an early color lesson, an art class or a family game where children learn rarer shades. Cards print two to a page, so a table of six players needs only three sheets.

Printing help

Give each player a card and a handful of crayons or colored counters. Call each color from your sheet in order, and children place the matching crayon on the word, so the game checks reading and recognition. A 3 x 3 round takes five minutes. Art teachers can ask students to color the square after each call, which leaves a finished palette. Print extra pages with the 5 versions switch for repeat rounds.

The list moves from basics like RED, BLUE and GREEN to shades that need careful reading, such as TURQUOISE, CRIMSON and CHARTREUSE. Children learn that colors have families: CRIMSON and MAROON are reds, TEAL and AQUA are blue-greens. Several names double as objects, such as ROSE, PLUM, CORAL, OLIVE and AMBER. The word SKYBLUE appears as one word. Readers often mix up GRAY with GREEN because they look alike.

For ages 4 to 6, use a 3 x 3 grid and one card per page, and paste only the basic names into Your own words. For older students, 5 x 5 with the full list is a decent vocabulary stretch. Try a coloring variation: players shade each square with the named color as it is called. Switch off the free center for a longer round.

Can colors bingo be played with crayons instead of chips?
Yes. After each call, children color the square with the matching crayon. It doubles as an art activity, but use a 3 x 3 grid so the round does not drag on.
Does the list include rare color names?
Yes. Alongside RED and BLUE it carries CHARTREUSE, FUCHSIA, KHAKI and INDIGO. Older students can look up a swatch of each unfamiliar shade after the game and compare.
How can I use colors bingo to teach a second language?
Paste the color words in your target language into Your own words, then play as usual. The cards keep the same layout, and learners match what they hear to what they read.
