-un Word Family Worksheets

The -un word family worksheets list six words for kids to build and write: bun, fun, gun, nun, run and sun. A paired -ub column keeps the short u sound constant. Made for first graders, early readers and parents or teachers running a phonics week.

Printing help

Print the sheet and read down the list together, letting the child supply the first sound of each word. Six rows take about ten minutes. Run and sun are the quickest to act out, and a bun can be a real snack at the end. Switch on the answer key to check the finished page, or use 5 versions for a small group. Have the child read the column back twice, pointing to each ending.

The child practices putting one ending, un, behind six different starting sounds. The n at the end is where small errors show up: some children draw it like an h or run the humps together. Fun, run and sun are the high-frequency words and worth knowing on sight. Before this page, short u should be solid. After it, the -ug and -ut families keep the vowel and change the ending.

Let the child supply the first sound for each of the six -un rows, then write and read the word. Run and sun come fastest. A child who draws n like h needs a slower look at the humps. Confident writers can go straight to Missing vowel to check u against o and a, and Rhyming adds a matching sheet.

Which -un words are worth knowing by sight?
Fun, run and sun come up constantly in early readers, so they pay off fastest. Bun is easy to picture. Once those are automatic, the rest of the list reads as the same ending with a new beginning.
Why does my child write n like h?
The n has one hump and the h has a tall stem plus a hump. Beginners often make both humps the same height or add a stem. Practice n as a short letter that stays between the lines.
What is the -ub column doing on this page?
It is a second short u ending. Reading bun and bub side by side shows how one final letter changes the whole word. It also gives bonus reading if the child finishes the -un rows early.
