-ap Word Family Worksheets
Nine words rhyme with tap on this sheet, from cap to zap, and each has its own row for writing. The -ad family appears alongside, so the short a stays the same while the ending shifts. It suits parents, tutors and early primary teachers.
About this page
Printing helpPlan a short session of ten to fifteen minutes. Read all nine words aloud, tapping the table on each p, then write them one by one. Zap tends to get a laugh and keeps energy up. Afterward check against the answer key together. A classroom teacher can print 5 versions and give each table a different order. On a busy day, Practice online lets a child write on a screen.
Children are learning that the end of a word can be a stable chunk. The p is a puff of air with no voice, which makes it easy to hear but easy to mix with b. Cap and gap are everyday words, nap and map link to real objects, and sap or rap need a brief explanation. Pairing -ap with -ad trains the eye on the final letter. After this, try -ip or -op.
Nine rows of first sound plus -ap is plenty. Have the child say the word, then write it, then underline the ap. A learner who mixes p and b will show it in cap and gap, so watch those rows closely. When the list reads smoothly, Missing vowel checks the a on its own. Rhyming is a short matching round for another day.
- Which -ap words may need explaining?
- Sap, rap and gap. Sap is the liquid in a tree, rap can mean a quick knock or a kind of music, and a gap is an empty space. Cap, lap, map, nap, tap and zap are everyday words.
- My child writes b instead of p. What helps?
- Say the sound with a puff of air on a hand: p pushes air, b does not. Then trace the letter, starting with the stick going down. Use a bouncing ball for b and a puff for p.
- Is nine words too many for one page?
- For a beginner, it can be. Write the first four or five words and read the rest aloud, then finish the others later. Reading all nine still has value, since the pattern shows up every time.
