-um Word Family Worksheets

The -um word family worksheets give four words to build and write: gum, hum, sum and yum. With the paired -ub column, the sheet reinforces short u and stays brief. A good fit for kindergarteners and early first graders, teachers and parents who want a small, low-pressure list.

About this page

Printing help

With only four words, this sheet takes five to eight minutes, so it fits at the end of a reading lesson or as a warm-up. Say each word, have the child hum a bar of a tune for hum, and then write. Sum can be tied to a simple math sentence. Check with the answer key, or use 5 versions to hand a different order to each student.

The ending um joins a lip-closing sound to the short u, which children usually hear clearly. The m is a letter with two humps that sometimes gets written with three. Because the list is short, it is a chance for a child to succeed quickly and feel confident. Yum is an exclamation more than a word, so treat it as fun. Use this after -ug or -un, then add -ub.

Four rows, each first sound plus -um, so most children finish in five minutes. Hum for hum, and say gum, sum and yum with lips together before writing. A child who writes n for m should feel the closed lips. If there is time left, Missing vowel checks the u, and Rhyming gives a short matching sheet.

Why does this page have only four words?
The -um family has just four common words at this level: gum, hum, sum and yum. Padding it would mean made-up words. A short list also works as an easy win for a young reader.
Is yum a real word?
It is a common interjection that young children read in books and say at meals. It follows the same pattern as the others, so it is good practice. Treat it as a fun word instead of a vocabulary item.
How do I help a child who writes n instead of m?
Have them press their lips together while saying the word, then count the humps while writing: two for n, three for m. Tracing a large m on paper first helps the hand remember.
