-ug Word Family Worksheets

Seven words take roughly twelve minutes, so plan a short session and stop before attention drops. Read the first word together and let the child try the others alone. Hugging and tugging are easy to act out between rows. Use the answer key afterward to check, or print the 5 versions so a class of beginners cannot copy a neighbor. Finish by reading the list top to bottom while pointing at each word.

Know the short u first. Afterward, try -un and -ub for new endings.

Why are bug, dug and mug so easy to mix up?

The letters b, d and g all use a round shape with a stem, so beginners swap them. Slow down on the first letter of each word and say its sound while writing. Mirror confusion at this age is normal.

What does the -ut column add?

It lets the child compare bug with but and see that a different ending makes a new word with the same vowel. It also gives extra short u reading when the -ug column is done. You can ignore it at first.
