-ub Word Family Worksheets

The -ub word family worksheets list five words to build and write: cub, hub, rub, sub and tub. A paired -ut column keeps the short u sound steady. Written for first graders, kindergarten teachers and parents who want a shorter, gentler sheet.

Printing help

Five rows make this one of the lighter sheets, about eight minutes for most beginners. Read cub, hub, rub, sub and tub aloud, then let the child write each one. Bath time is a natural moment to say tub and rub out loud. After finishing, use the answer key to compare spelling, or print the 5 versions for a pair of children who sit side by side.

The ending ub is the b version of the short u pattern, so the child is learning to separate it from -ug and -un. Final b is often written as d, so watch the direction of the bowl. Hub and sub have less everyday use for young children, which makes saying them in a sentence worthwhile. Short u should already be familiar. Next, try the other short u families.

Five rows of first sound plus -ub is light, so it suits a child who tires quickly. Say each word in a sentence, since hub and sub are less familiar. Watch the final b for a d. Missing vowel checks the middle sound once the words are written, and Rhyming adds a matching round if there is time left.

What do hub and sub mean for a child?
A hub is the center of something, like a bus hub. A sub can be a sandwich or a substitute teacher. Give one example each. Cub, rub and tub need no help for most children.
Is five words enough for a full lesson?
For a short sitting, yes. Add the Rhyming or Missing vowel sheet afterward if you want more time on the same sound. Many beginners do better with a short list done well than a long one rushed.
How do I help with b versus d at the end?
Say the sound, then trace the letter with the stem first and the bowl on the right. A bat and ball picture on a sticky note helps. Repeated slow writing fixes it faster than correction.
