About this page

Printing help

Nine words is a medium list, so allow around twelve minutes. Read the words aloud, tapping a dot on paper for dot, then write each one. Hot and pot are easy to mime. Use the answer key to check spelling, and press New version for a fresh order. Teachers can print 5 versions so neighbors are not copying, and Practice online suits a tablet. Offer a short break halfway through.

The o is short, as in hot, not the long o in go. Got and not are also very common sight words, so this page pays off twice. Jot and rot are rarer, while cot and lot may need a short explanation. T is a quick stop. Pairing -ot with -ob makes the child check the final letter. Then try -op and -og. Come back to the nine words in two sittings across the week, and let hot and pot lead each one.

Nine rows of first sound plus -ot is a medium list, so offer a break after five. Got and not are sight words, so spend a moment on them. Draw a dot on a sticky note for dot. When writing is easy, Missing vowel checks short o against a, and Rhyming is a matching sheet for a lighter follow-up.

Do got and not count as sight words here?
Yes. Both are common beginner sight words and also follow the sound pattern, so they do double duty. Children can sound them out now and later recognize them on sight in simple books.
Why does my child say hot as hoat?
They are reaching for the long o. Tell them short o is a mouth-open sound, like opening wide at the doctor. Say hot and hoat side by side so the contrast is clear.
Which nine -ot words come up?
Cot, dot, got, hot, jot, lot, not, pot and rot, nine words. They all use short o and follow the pattern. The -ob column beside them offers extra practice.
