-ob Word Family Worksheets

The -ob word family worksheets give six words to build and write: bob, cob, job, mob, rob and sob. A second column of -og words holds the short o steady. Made for first graders, early readers and the adults sitting beside them.

Read the six words aloud once, then cover them and let the child write each from the starting sound. Allow about ten minutes. The words suggest small scenes: a job around the house, a sob after a scraped knee, corn on the cob at dinner. Talk through one scene before writing. Turn on the answer key for quick checking, and use the 5 versions switch when each student at a table needs a different order.

Children practice attaching ob to six starting sounds. Spelling is the harder half: the final b looks like d to many young writers, and the two letters get swapped in -ob and -od words. Point to the straight stem and the bowl on the right, which is the b. Bob is also a name, so a capital B may appear in other reading. Before this, know the short o. Next, try -ot or -op.

Six rows of first sound plus -ob. If b and d keep flipping, leave it at Word family and add two or three extra rows by hand rather than moving on. Talk through one scene first, such as a job at home or corn on the cob. Missing vowel then tests the o, and Rhyming suits a child who reads the words quickly.

How do I stop my child writing d for b in these words?
Teach one cue: b has its stem first, then the bowl on the right, like a bat and ball. Have the child say the sound while tracing a big b in the air, then write the row slowly.
Is rob a good word for a six year old?
It is a real, common word and it follows the same pattern as the others, so it belongs. Define it simply as taking something that is not yours. If a parent prefers, skip it and use the other five.
Why is there an -og column on the -ob page?
Both endings use the short o, so the second column lets the child compare bob with bog and see that the last letter changes the word. It also gives extra short o reading once the -ob column is finished.
