Printing help

Zip, sip and dip can all be mimed, so start with a few seconds of acting. Then read the seven words, write them, and read the -ig column. The whole thing takes around ten minutes. Use the answer key to check spelling, and press New version if the child wants another go. A teacher can print 5 versions so tables see different orders. Read the finished column back with a pointer.

P is a puff of air with no voice, the same ending as the -ap sheet, so a child who knows that page has a head start. Dip, hip, lip, rip, sip, tip and zip are mostly concrete body words and actions. Short i can slide toward e, so check vowels as you read. After this, -in and -it fill out the short i set.

Hold a hand in front of the mouth and feel the puff on p before the seven rows. Each row is first sound plus -ip, so the child says it, writes it and reads it. Mime zip, sip and dip first. If seven is too many, write four. Missing vowel later confirms short i, and Rhyming is a matching round.

What is the difference between -ip and -it?
Both use short i, but the ending differs. P is a puff made with the lips, t is a tap with the tongue. Read lip and lit aloud and let the child feel which part of the mouth moves.
What do the seven -ip rows spell?
Dip, hip, lip, rip, sip, tip and zip, seven words. All are real and regular. Zip is usually the favorite, since a child can mime it as they say it.
Can this page follow the -ap sheet?
Yes. The p ending is the same, only the vowel changes. A child who has read cap and tap will find zip and tip familiar in structure, which makes it a fine next step.
