About this page

Printing help

Five words fit into about eight minutes. Read them aloud together, let the child write each, then read the -eg column independently. Ten is a number as well as a word, so you can tie it to counting. Use the answer key to check, and New version for another round. The 5 versions switch is handy for a group, and Practice online works on a tablet.

The words here include a plural (men), a number (ten) and a place (den), so the page touches grammar and math without leaving the pattern. The final n is a nasal sound that beginners sometimes drop. Hen and pen are the easiest to picture. After this, the -ed and -et pages build the same short e vowel with new endings. Say each word slowly while pointing at its letters.

Five rows, each first sound plus -en, so a second pass the same day is easy. Ask the child to use ten, men and hen in a sentence before writing each one. Missing vowel then checks short e without the prompt. Rhyming is a matching sheet, and the pairs on this one come straight from the family.

Is men a problem because it is a plural?
No. It follows the same sound pattern, so a child can read it. If they ask, it means more than one man. Grammar can wait; for now, they just blend m, e, n.
What do the five -en rows spell?
Den, hen, men, pen and ten, five words. They are short and regular. Ten gives a natural link to counting, so you can ask the child to count to ten after finishing the page.
Why would a child write pin for pen?
Short e and short i sound close, and the child writes the letter they hear. Exaggerate the open mouth for e, and repeat both words side by side so the difference becomes clearer.
