Printing help

Start by reading the five words aloud. Red and bed are the ones most children already say, so begin there. Then let the child write each word, which takes about eight minutes. Check with the answer key, and give a second try with New version. A teacher with a group can print 5 versions, and a child who likes screens can use Practice online. Read the finished page aloud once more.

Two words here are tricky for different reasons. Led looks like the metal lead, and wed means married, which is a stretch for a six year old. Bed, fed and red are simple and concrete. The d at the end is a quick stop, and some children flip it with b when writing. This family leads naturally to -eg and -et. Two or three short passes a day with bed and red stick better than one long block.

Start with bed and red, which most children say already, then add fed and led. Each row is first sound plus -ed, written out and read. If b and d keep flipping, write bed slowly and say the shapes as you draw. Led needs a one-line meaning. Missing vowel and Rhyming come later for the short e check and pair matching.

How do I explain led and wed?
Led means went in front, as in she led the line. Wed means to marry, so it is the one to mention briefly. Both read correctly by blending, so meaning can follow later.
Why does my child write bed as ded?
Letter b and d are mirror images, and many beginners reverse them. Draw the bed with its headboard and footboard to show the shape, or use the bed hand trick. Practice in short bursts.
What are the five -ed words, and how do they compare with -en?
Bed, fed, led, red and wed, five words. They sit next to the -en column, so a child can compare bed with ben and see how the ending changes the word.
