Printing help

Cut and shuffle the deck for a short daily round. Count how many the child answers without pausing, and keep the misses aside for tomorrow's round. Print double-sided with the answers on the back for self-checking, or single-sided to keep an answer sheet for the adult. Print again for a new set once the first deck is quick, and keep the old deck for a weekly check.

Subtraction facts within 20, like 15 − 7, are harder than addition for most children. Many get through by counting backward, which is slow and error-prone. Better habits: think of the matching addition, since 7 plus what makes 15, or go through ten, taking 5 to reach 10 and then 2 more. Knowing addition facts first is the base. After this, two-digit subtraction and word problems become less of a struggle.

Pick 8 cards when starting out, 16 for steady practice, 24 for a review. Mix them with addition cards from the same range to show how the facts pair up. Ask for the addition partner of a missed card. A new download draws a different set, so a child who has memorized one deck can try another.

Why is subtraction harder to memorize than addition?
Counting back is slow and error-prone, and the facts have no commutative partner. Linking each to an addition fact, such as 15 − 7 and 7 + 8, makes recall faster.
Can I print the answers on the back of each card?
Yes, if your printer duplexes. Flip on the long edge and the mirrored answer pages line up behind their cards. Without duplex, print single-sided and treat the answer sheet as an adult key for checking.
Can I mix these with addition cards?
Yes. Shuffle both decks together to show how facts pair, then ask for the partner fact after each answer. A child who sees 15 − 7 then 7 + 8 starts to connect the two.
