About this page
Printing helpHave the child say the sound, /z/, like a buzzing bee, before tracing. Z has three strokes, so go slowly: across the top, down the diagonal, across the bottom. Trace the solid rows, then dashed, then dotted. Finish with the empty lines. About ten minutes covers it. Put a sticker on the page for any Z that points the right way, and keep a mirror example nearby for children who flip it.
Z is made of two parallel horizontals joined by a diagonal. The skill is direction: all the strokes travel left to right, which is the direction of reading. Reversed Z's and a Z that turns into an S are the usual mistakes, and both are normal in young writers. Lowercase z is the same shape smaller. It is the last letter of the alphabet, and it follows the diagonal practice of V, W, X and Y.
Large lines are best for a child who reverses Z, because the three strokes are easy to see and check. Move to Medium once the diagonal runs cleanly from top right to bottom left. Choose Small for neat copy work. Cursive z has its own look with a curved hook, so treat it as a separate lesson after print Z is steady.
- Why does my child write Z backwards?
- Reversals are common until about age seven. Point to the start, which is the top left, and have the child begin every Z there. The solid and dashed rows give a starting target.
- How do I stop Z from turning into an S?
- The diagonal in Z is a straight line, not a curve. Ask the child to imagine ruling it with a straightedge, then trace the dashed diagonals slowly, keeping the pencil moving in one direction.
- Are Z and z formed the same way?
- Yes, lowercase z uses the same three strokes at about half the height. After a few capital rows, the child can move to lowercase using the same movements.
