Letter Q Handwriting Practice
Q is an O with a tail, and for English spelling it almost always travels with u. A smaller page for kindergartners and first graders who already draw a good circle, with tracing rows in three sizes and blank lines for solo writing.

About this page
Printing helpTrace the circle first, then add the tail on the lower right with a short slanted line. Say circle, then tail. One Large row and one Medium row is enough, as Q is not used often. Then try the word queen or quilt on the blank lines to see how Q and u go together. A rainy afternoon is a good time, and the whole page takes about six minutes. Keep it relaxed, since Q rarely shows up in a child's own writing.
Capital Q is a counterclockwise circle with a small diagonal tail crossing its lower right. The usual mistakes are a tail that hangs apart from the circle, one that slopes the wrong way or one that dominates the whole letter. Lowercase q is a different case: a bowl with a descending stick on the right side, which looks like a backward p, and children flip it often. It is the rarest of the printed letters in daily writing.
Choose Large to give the tail room. If a child draws the tail as a long curved line, tell them it is a small kick. Drop to Medium when the circle is steady. For lowercase q, keep a p example nearby and compare which side the stick lives on. Do not overdo Q: two good traces are better than ten tired ones.
- Why is Q always followed by u?
- In English spelling, nearly all words with Q have a u after it, as in queen, quick and quiet. Teach them as a pair once the child can write both separately.
- How do I stop my child confusing q with p and g?
- q has a stick on its right, p on its left, and g has a curled tail. Compare them on one sheet and point out where the stick sits.
- Is Q worth a full lesson?
- A short one, yes. It is a rare letter, but the circle with a tail is useful practice for closing loops and adding an extra stroke.
