Letter O Handwriting Practice
O is a closed loop, and getting it to close is the entire job. This O page is for preschoolers who have just started to draw circles and for kindergartners who want their loops rounder, with three sizes of tracing rows and blank practice lines.

About this page
Printing helpBegin with a big air circle, counterclockwise, then do it on the Large row. Let the child finish by closing the loop where it started. Two rows and a break are enough. Next, ask them to turn a few Os into things: a sun, a face, a wheel. Words like on, or and owl are easy to try after. The page takes about five minutes.
A good O starts near the top, travels left and around, and ends exactly where it began. Common trouble: starting at the bottom, drawing clockwise or leaving an overlap or gap at the join. Capital and lowercase O are both circles, differing only in size, so O is one of the few letters with an easy lowercase match. The same counterclockwise motion builds c, a, d, g and q later.
Large is a good start, because a small O is hard to close. If the circle turns into an egg, ask the child to make it round like a coin. Use Medium once the loop meets cleanly. Drawing the O with a finger in sand or flour is a good warm-up. Switch from Print to Cursive only after printing is solid.
- Why won't my child's O close?
- Closing a loop requires aiming the pencil back at a point it left. Put a dot where the circle should end and ask the child to land on it. A few tries often fix the gap.
- Does it matter which direction the circle goes?
- Yes. Counterclockwise from the top is the standard, and it sets up later letters like a, d and g. A clockwise habit forms awkward joins in cursive.
- At what age can a child draw a good circle?
- Most children can copy a circle around age three. A tidy, closed, round O that lands back on its starting point takes closer to four or five, so expect a few uneven early attempts.
