Letter N Handwriting Practice

N is three strokes in a zigzag: up, down the slant and up again. This letter N page gives kindergartners and first graders tracing rows, plus blank lines, and it pairs well with M and H when you need to teach the three together.

Start with the left stick, then draw the diagonal from the top left to the bottom right, then the final stick up. Say it quietly as you go. A Large row works first, then the Medium row. Have the child write nose, net or nut on the blank rows. Because N has no curves, many children finish a row in under three minutes, which makes it a nice quick win in the middle of a longer writing session.

The skills are straight vertical lines and a single diagonal that connects their ends. The trouble spots are a diagonal that starts in the middle of the stick or ends short of the second stick, and a reversed N that looks like a Z with extra lines. Lowercase n is a stick with an arch, much like h but shorter. Children confuse the two, and also confuse n with m when the arches are counted wrongly.

Large is the best choice at the start so the diagonal can run clean corner to corner. Slow the child down at the corners; touching the top and bottom lines is the goal. After a few good rows, move to Medium. A mirrored N is a common sight even in first grade, so do not panic and just trace over a model.

My daughter's N keeps coming out mirrored. Normal?
Reversal of N is common up to age seven. The fix is repetition with a clear starting point: down first on the left. A model beside the practice row helps a lot.
How is lowercase n different from capital N?
Lowercase n is a short stick with one arch, and capital N is a tall zigzag. Many children draw capital N for both and need the extra lesson later.
Should the diagonal touch the sticks?
Yes, it should meet the top of the left stick and the bottom of the right stick. That is what gives N its clean zigzag shape, and a gap at either end is the usual reason it looks sloppy.
