About this page
Printing helpStart from the top, pull down in a straight line, and then curve left at the bottom. Say it quietly while tracing: down, and hook. Do one Large row slowly, then the Medium row. If your child enjoys it, add a lowercase j with a dot on a separate line. Jump, jam and jet are words to say aloud. Ask the child to jump after the page.
Capital J sits on the baseline with a short hook, while lowercase j drops below it, like g, p, q and y. The common errors are a hook that goes the wrong way, which makes a backward J like a reversed mirror, and a tail that stops short. Children also forget the dot on the lowercase. J is a low-frequency letter, so beginners meet it rarely, which is why a dedicated page helps.
On Large, the hook has space to curve smoothly. Remind the child that the hook always goes left, toward the earlier letters in a word. Move to Medium when the curve is round, not a sharp angle. If the lowercase tail keeps floating above the line, point to the space below it and say that this letter lives in two lines.
- Why does my child write J facing the wrong way?
- Reversals of J are common until about age seven. Say that the hook points left, toward where the writing came from, and trace over a model on a slow row.
- Is lowercase j different from capital J?
- Yes, lowercase j has a dot above and a tail that drops below the baseline. Capital J usually stays on the line. Teach the capital first and add the lowercase when the child writes words.
- What are good beginner words for J?
- Jam, jet, job, jug and Jim all use short sounds and are easy to draw. The lowercase j inside them gives the child a reason to practice the dropping tail in context.
