Print the pages and take two or three digits per day, so the set lasts about a week. Say the number aloud, trace it once with a finger, then use the pencil. A bowl of counters helps: put out that many and let the child set them next to the row. Teachers can use the sheet at a math center. The Large lines are the default and are easiest for little hands.

Writing a digit means learning where to start and which way to turn, which matters more than looking neat. Zero is included because children skip it, yet it is needed for 10, 20 and 100. The usual problems are 5 drawn with the hat first, 6 and 9 flipped, and 2 or 3 turned the wrong way. Counting aloud comes first, and writing two-digit numbers comes next.

Large lines suit three- and four-year-olds, whose hands are still learning to control the pencil. Move to Medium once the digits stay inside the lines. Small is mainly useful for older children tidying up. If a child reverses a digit, put a dot on the start, trace with a finger, and return to that row the next day.

Why does the pack include zero?

Zero is needed for 10, 20 and 100, so a child who has only traced 1 to 9 gets stuck. Tracing it early also teaches a closed curve, which is useful for letters like o.

My child writes 6 and 9 backwards. What helps?

Start each from the top and trace with a finger first. Say a cue while tracing, such as a loop at the bottom for 6. Short daily rows work better than a long one.

What age can start tracing digits?

Many children begin at three or four with Large lines, once they can hold a crayon. Start with the digits they can already say, and keep sessions under ten minutes.
