Blank Multiplication Chart

Hand over the sheet and a pencil, start a timer and have the child fill in as many as possible within a set time. Record the time or the count, then repeat the same task in a week. Younger students can do just the first six rows. The answer key page lets the child mark their own work and circle the wrong ones. Print another later and redo only those.

Filling in the chart tests recall directly, with no clue on the page. Children tend to fill the easy rows first (1s, 2s, 5s, 10s), then slow down on 6s, 7s and 8s. Mirrored cells let them copy a fact they have already written, which is a legitimate strategy. Before this sheet comes the filled chart. After it come division facts, which use the same grid.

Use 1 to 12 for fourth and fifth graders, and 1 to 10 for third graders. Blank mode is for testing, so keep the filled chart hidden. Missing products is the easier alternative when the full blank sheet feels like too much. Try a variation: fill only the diagonal first, then the rest.

How fast should a child fill in the full chart?

There is no fixed target. Track a child's own time: a first try may take 15 minutes, and a few weeks of practice often halves it. Compare against their last attempt, not the class.

Is it okay if my child copies mirrored cells?

Yes. Knowing that 7 by 8 and 8 by 7 are the same is a real skill. It only counts as a shortcut if they copy without understanding why.

What do I do with the wrong answers?

Circle them and look for a pattern, such as all 7s or all 8s. Then practice those rows for a few days before trying a fresh blank chart.
