Camping Word Search

Print one before a camping trip and tuck it in the bag for the car or the tent on a rainy afternoon. In class it works for early finishers or a summer-themed center. Three levels share the theme, so you can give the same theme at different levels. Solve it on paper with a pencil, or tap Solve online on a tablet for the car ride. The theme mixes things children can picture, like TENT, MAP and BAG, with outdoor vocabulary they may only read about, such as LANTERN, WILDLIFE and CAMPSITE. Short words build letter-scanning on the 10x10 grid. At the 20x20 level, long entries like MARSHMALLOW or FLASHLIGHT make children track many letters at once, and words sharing letters like CAMPS, CAMPFIRE and CAMPSITE can send the eye to the wrong spot. It is a useful way to practice careful reading.

A preschooler or kindergartener can start on Easy with a parent naming the first letter of each tent, lantern or trail word. Second and third graders get more scanning work from Medium, where words also run on the diagonal. Hard fits older kids on a long drive. Show the answer key only after a real try, and print the 5 versions for a group trip so seats do not share answers.

Can I make the search from my own packing list?

Yes. Switch to My own words and enter up to 30 items such as SLEEPING, FLASHLIGHT or BACKPACK. The grid is built around them. Afterward, the child can tick each item off a real list.

Will this keep kids busy on a car ride?

Yes, Hard has words in a 20x20 grid, which can take a long time, and Solve online on a tablet saves paper. For shorter drives, Medium is usually enough.

Which level is right for a six year old?

Easy, with short words like TENT, BUG and SUN in a 10x10 grid. Words only run across and down, so a six year old can read straight along rows and columns.
