Printing help

Print a page and spend about five minutes on it. Ask the child to say what happens to a number when it is multiplied by ten before they start. Most notice the zero on the end quickly. Let them fill the sheet, then check together with the answer key. A good extension is to use coins: ten dimes make a dollar, so counting dimes is the same as multiplying by ten. Fresh versions through the week keep it light.

Multiplying by ten shifts every digit one place to the left, and zero fills the empty ones place. That makes it as much a place value lesson as a times table. Children sometimes learn the rule add a zero without understanding it, which breaks when decimals appear. Tens connect to skip counting by ten, to money, and to measuring in tens. They also help the fives, which are half of tens.

Choose Stacked for a young child and In a row to practice writing number sentences. Missing number mode asks what number times ten makes seventy, which teaches that dividing by ten removes a zero. Because the tens are quick, follow the sheet with the 5 times table or the 9 times table and compare how the facts relate.

Is multiplying by 10 just adding a zero?
It works for whole numbers, but the true idea is that each digit moves one place to the left. Explaining it that way avoids confusion when decimals arrive later.
Why teach the 10s alongside place value?
Because ten groups of anything bundles into the next place. Seeing that ten tens make a hundred links the table directly to how numbers are built.
What comes after the 10s?
Most classes pair the tens with the fives next, then move to twos and threes. Use the tens as a reference: nine times a number is ten times it minus the number.
