Printing help

Use a page as a ten-minute opener, a homework set or a Friday check. Stacked layout is the best choice at this size, because tens and ones must line up. Mark with the answer key, then ask the child to redo each wrong problem on scrap paper. Press New version for a new page every time. Teachers with mixed groups can print different problem counts, using 12 for those who need space to work.

Subtracting within 100 asks the child to apply place value: take ones from ones, tens from tens, and borrow when the top digit is smaller. Borrowing errors are the commonest mistake, followed by subtracting the smaller digit from the larger whatever its position. Grade 2 subtraction to 20 comes before this, and Subtraction with Regrouping follows for focused borrowing practice. Estimating first catches most slips.

Check that a child can subtract a single digit from a 2-digit number before trying this page. Use 12 problems if borrowing is new, 30 once it is routine. Missing number mode asks the child to work out what was taken away, which builds estimating and checking by adding back. Teach checking: add the answer to the number subtracted.

How do I check a subtraction answer?
Add the answer to the number you took away. If you get the starting number back, it is right. Teach this habit early, since it catches borrowing mistakes and builds the link between operations.
Why does my child subtract the smaller digit from the larger?
They are ignoring which number is on top. Remind them that the top number stays first. Use base-ten blocks to show why you have to borrow when the top digit is too small.
Should I start with borrowing or not?
Start without. Once subtraction within 100 is solid on easier problems, move on to the Subtraction with Regrouping page, where borrowing is the focus. Mixing it in too early can undermine confidence.
