The trap is the missing place. Seeing 3,000 + 40 + 7, many children write 347 because they simply line the pieces up. Standard form requires putting a zero in the hundreds. This is the point where place value understanding separates from pattern copying. Children usually learn to build numbers from base ten blocks first, and later use this skill to compare, round and add multi-digit numbers with regrouping.

Set Digits to 2 to 3 for second grade, 4 for third and 5 to 6 when comfort with commas is solid. A child who drops zeros benefits from drawing a place value chart (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands) and filling one box per addend. Choose 12 problems if each one takes a long time, 20 for a normal session, or 30 for a fluency round.

Why does my child write 347 for 3,000 + 40 + 7?

They are stacking the parts instead of reading their places. Draw four boxes labeled thousands to ones, put each addend in its own box, and fill any empty box with 0. Doing that a few times fixes the habit.

Should answers include the comma?
