Farm animals Word Search

Print one before a farm field trip, as part of a farm unit, or for a calm afternoon. Three levels share the theme. Ask children to sort the animals into groups, like birds and four-legged animals, or find the baby animals such as LAMB, KID and CHICK. For a particular book, use My own words and type up to 30 terms. Give each child a different version using the 5 versions switch.

Children learn that animals have special names for male, female and baby: EWE, RAM and LAMB; HEN, ROOSTER and CHICK. The list brings this out, along with DRAKE and GANDER for male ducks and geese. Easy words are short, like COW and PIG. Medium has HORSE, SHEEP, GOOSE and DONKEY, with vowel pairs that are worth noticing. Hard adds BARNYARD, PASTURE and FARMHOUSE, plus words like HEIFER that many adults forget. KID can mean a goat or a child, which makes a nice talking point.

At ages 4 to 6, Easy keeps words running across and down, which is plenty for a first farm sheet. Grades 1 to 3 can move on to Medium. Hard is for grade 4 and up, or a farm enthusiast. Before the search, read the word list aloud and ask which animals the child knows. Afterward, ask about baby and adult pairs. Keep the answer key for one stuck word.

Does the list include baby animal names?

Yes. LAMB, KID, CHICK, PUPPY, KITTEN and GOSLING are on the list, along with adult names like EWE, RAM and HEN. It can start a talk about male, female and baby names.

What level suits a preschooler?

Easy, with short words in a 10x10 grid, read aloud by a grown-up. Many preschoolers match the first letter and enjoy finding COW or PIG even if they cannot read all of it.
