Letter X Coloring Page
Letter X Coloring Page: a big capital X in bubble outline, with bubbles scattered around. Parents and teachers use it for the one letter that rarely starts a word, with X-ray, xylophone and box on the table.
About this page
Printing helpX is tricky to teach by initial sound, so print the page and talk about where it hides: at the end of fox, box, six and mix. Ask the child to find those words. Coloring takes about ten minutes. A xylophone, real or toy, makes the first-sound word memorable. Teachers can hang X next to a treasure map as a mark of the spot. Color online is handy on a tablet.
X is two diagonal lines that cross, and children often draw it as a plus sign. Coloring the two strokes in different colors shows that they cross in the middle and slant. It is also a letter with a unique role: it is mostly heard at the end of words, and its sound is really two sounds, k and s. After X, only Y and Z remain. It also looks the same upside down.
The X is two strokes crossing, so color one diagonal in a warm shade and the other in a cool one, and the crossing point stands out. A child who likes treasure maps can treat the middle as the spot where the chest is buried. Outline firmly in pencil first if the edges feel loose. For a variation, add small x-marks in the bubbles. - What X words should I use?
- Most children will meet X at the end of words like fox, box and six. For a beginning X, use xylophone and X-ray. Spend more time on the ending sounds, since those are more common in reading.
- Why does my child draw a plus sign for X?
- A plus is easier because the lines are straight up and across. Tell them X leans. Have them color one slanted stroke at a time and watch the two lines cross in the middle.
- Is the letter X worth a full page?
- Yes. Because X shows up less, children benefit from a slower look at it. The page also fits a treasure hunt or a pirate unit, giving the letter a reason to exist.
