Printing help

T is made of two straight lines, so it is one of the easiest letters to color neatly. Print it for a child who is just starting with crayons, then talk about T words: tiger, tree, truck, toes, turtle. Ten minutes of work is plenty. Teachers can hang colored Ts together for a trains or turtles theme. If crayons are not handy, Color online lets the child fill the shape on a tablet.

T is a stem with a flat bar on top, and nothing curves. For that reason it is among the first letters children can write on their own, usually right after L, I and H. The common slip is placing the bar partway down the stem so it looks like a cross. Coloring the top bar one color and the stem another shows exactly where the two pieces meet. After T, children move on to curved letters such as U.

The T is two strokes, so give the top bar and the stem different colors and the child sees a line across and a line down. Blue, tan and teal give easy sound hooks. Large strokes suit very young hands, so offer chunky crayons and let scribbles wander. For a variation, turn the bar into a tabletop or a tree branch. Press New version to print a second page with different bubbles.

Is T a good first letter to color?
Yes. Two straight strokes and big open areas make it forgiving. A child who scribbles will still fill most of the shape, which feels like success and keeps them interested in the next letter.
My child draws the bar of the T too low. Why?
Young children often place it by guess. Color the top bar red and the stem blue, then show that the bar sits on top like a roof. Tracing with a finger helps too.
What themes pair with a T day?
Trains, turtles, tigers and tea parties are easy to build around. Pick one and keep the activity small: a toy train on the table, a picture book about turtles, and the colored T beside them.
