Printing help

Print S and let children make the sound before they color, a long hiss like a leaky tire. A snake story works well here: the letter itself looks like a snake, so a child can color it green with spots and then name other animals and objects that start with S. The page takes ten minutes or so and fits a quiet center. On a tablet, Color online lets a child fill the curves with a fingertip.

S is the first letter in this stretch with no straight line at all. It is a continuous curve that bends one way and then the other, and that makes it harder to write. Children often reverse it into a backward S or flatten the turns. Coloring the outline gives them a feel for the double curve before a pencil is involved. Children who have done C and a few straight-line letters are ready for this shape.

Follow the curve with one crayon without lifting it, the way the letter is written, then fill the bubbles around it in a second color. Green turns the S into a snake, and stripes in two colors show where the curve changes direction. Say the hissing sound while coloring. For a variation, add eyes and a tongue in pencil at one end. Press New version for another bubble layout.

Why do children write S backward?
The curve has no stem to anchor it, so the direction is easy to flip. This is normal in early years. Let the child trace a snake path in the air, then color the page, and revisit it in a month.
What S words work for a preschool circle time?
Sun, sock, snake, spoon and star are easy to picture and say. Bring one real object, like a sock, and let children touch it. Start the sound slowly and keep the list short.
Can I use the S page for a snake craft?
Yes. Color the letter with stripes, cut it out and add a paper tongue and eyes. The S already has the right curved body, so the craft takes only a few minutes with scissors and glue.
