Printing help

Print R when you introduce its growly sound, and let children hunt for R words: rabbit, rain, ring, robot, red. A child can color the page in one sitting, about ten to fifteen minutes, then glue on a paper rabbit or rainbow. In a classroom, line the colored Rs along a ribbon at kid height. A child who wants to skip the crayons can use Color online and tap through the shapes on a screen.

R builds on P: a straight stem, a bump at the top, and a diagonal leg kicking out to the right. Children who have already colored P find the extra leg is the only new part. The leg often confuses beginners, who may curve it or leave it off, and the bump can get mixed with B. Coloring each part a different color shows how three simple strokes combine. After R, S offers a very different curved path.

Start with the stick and bump as for P, then use a contrasting color on the leg, since the kicking leg is the part that turns R from P. Red, rose and robin-egg blue match the letter's sound. Let the child say the name while coloring each stroke. For a variation, make the leg a ribbon of stripes. Press New version if a sibling wants their own copy.

What is the difference between R and P?
R is P plus a leg. Have your child color the stem and bump in one color, then add the diagonal leg in another. Seeing the two letters together makes the extra stroke easy to remember.
Which R words are good for a three-year-old?
Use words the child already says and can see: rain, rabbit, red, rug, run. Avoid tricky blends at first. Let the child act out running or hop like a rabbit while repeating the starting sound.
Can I make a rainbow craft from this page?
Yes. Color R with rainbow stripes, cut a rainbow from construction paper and glue it beside the letter. Add the word rainbow in your own handwriting beneath. It turns a short coloring session into a small display.
