Printing help

Print it on the day you say the P sound out loud, then ask your child to name things that start with it: pig, pizza, penguin, pumpkin, pencil. Coloring takes about ten minutes and gives you a calm moment to talk. Preschool teachers can pass out one sheet per child and tape the finished letters under a P label. Parents can hang it on the fridge until the next letter comes. If a tablet is easier than crayons, use Color online and fill the shapes with a fingertip.

P is a good early letter because it combines one straight line with one round bump. Children usually trace down first, then loop the bump on the right side. The mix-up to watch for is P versus b and d, since the bump can flip direction. Coloring the whole outline slowly teaches the eye where the bump sits, at the top and facing right. After P, many children are ready for R, which is the same shape with an extra leg.

Color the stick of the P in one shade and the bump in another, so the child sees a line plus a curve. Pink, purple and pumpkin orange give easy sound hooks for the letter's name. Trace the outline with a finger before coloring, starting at the top of the stick. For a variation, let the child dot the bump with polka dots. Press New version for a second copy with a different bubble layout.

Which words should I use to teach the P sound?
Pick concrete nouns a child can picture: pig, pan, pie, puppy, popcorn. Say the first sound clearly, a short puff of air with no vowel added. Then let the child find which words on a shelf or in a book start with it.
My child writes P backward. Is that normal?
Yes, reversals are common until about age seven or eight. Keep practice short and positive. Let the child color the outline of P, then point out that the bump faces the same way as a person walking right across a page.
What goes well with this page on a P day?
A snack with a P word, like pretzels or pears, makes the sound memorable. Add a puzzle, a puppet and a pencil to a P basket. Hang the colored page beside the basket so children can look at the shape.
