Letter N Coloring Page

Letter N Coloring Page offers a poster-sized capital N, two posts joined by one diagonal, with bubbles scattered around it. Teachers print it for alphabet weeks and birthday banners, and parents use it to teach the /n/ sound heard in nose, nest and nine.

Printing help

Walk a finger along the N: up, diagonal down, up. Younger children can trace it with a dry marker first. Coloring takes about ten minutes. Ask the child to color the diagonal in a different color from the posts, then point to the triangles of white space on either side. Afterward, hunt around the room for N things such as a napkin or a nut. Press New version for another copy with different bubbles.

N has one diagonal line, which is the main challenge. Children often draw a pair of sloped lines like an M, or make a Z shape. Coloring the diagonal in its own color teaches them it runs from the top left to the bottom right. N is also a good partner for M, since the two share posts but differ in the middle. O is next.

Crayons are fine for toddlers, and markers for older children. A variation is coloring the two triangles of white space beside the diagonal in separate colors, which highlights the shape of the letter. Another is stamping sticker dots along the diagonal. Print M and N together for a direct comparison.

How is N different from M?
N has one diagonal line connecting two posts, while M has two peaks. Color the diagonal in a bright color and compare it with the V in M.
Why do some children make N look like Z?
Both use diagonals, and children may reverse direction. Trace the N in the air, then show that the diagonal goes from top left to bottom right.
Which words go with the /n/ sound?
Nose, nest, net, nine and nut are easy picks. Have the child touch their nose as they say each word to attach the sound to a gesture.
