Printing help

Show the child the path: up, down to the middle, up, and down again. Coloring takes about ten to fifteen minutes because of the sharp points. Ask the child to count the mountain peaks, two, and to color each peak in its own color. Afterward, make the /m/ sound by humming with closed lips. Use New version for extra copies or the 5 versions option for a group.

M has four strokes and two peaks, which makes it one of the busier capitals for a young child to follow. The narrow wedge-shaped spaces between the peaks are the hard part, since crayons tend to overshoot. Children also confuse M with N, which has one diagonal. Coloring and counting the peaks helps. M is the first sound many babies say, so it often feels familiar. N comes next.

Use crayons with a point for the narrow wedges, or fine markers for older children. Try coloring each peak in a different color to emphasize the two mountains. For a variation, ask the child to put a small sticker on the left post to mark where writing starts. Compare with N by printing both pages.

What helps with the narrow spaces in M?
Use the tip of a crayon or a fine marker and color slowly into the points. Coloring the wedges first, then the posts, makes the shape easier to control.
How do I tell M from N for a young learner?
M has two peaks and N has one diagonal. Ask the child to count the peaks, or to draw mountains in the air as they say the letter name.
Why is the M sound so easy for babies?
It only needs closed lips and a hum. Many first words, like mama, start with it. That familiarity gives children a head start when they meet the letter.
