Letter L Coloring Page
Letter L Coloring Page prints a tall capital L, a single straight stem with a foot turning right, inside a field of bubbles. It suits preschoolers learning the /l/ sound, classroom walls, and name banners for names like Liam, Lucy or Luna.
About this page
Printing helpTrace the L together: down, then across to the right. Coloring takes about ten minutes and is a good first page for a child who finds more complex letters daunting. Ask the child to color the foot in its own color. Afterward, think of L words, such as lion, leaf and lemon, and use a lemon for a smell test. Press New version for extra pages.
L has two straight lines and one right angle, which makes it among the simplest capitals. The turn at the corner is what children practice: stopping the vertical stroke and starting the horizontal one. Some children flip it to face left, so coloring the foot toward the right teaches direction, and the corner gives a first taste of stopping one stroke and starting another. The /l/ sound is made with the tongue behind the top teeth. M follows.
Crayons suit toddlers and markers suit older preschoolers. Try two colors, one for the stem and one for the foot, to show the right angle. A good variation is placing small star stickers along the foot to teach direction. Print a copy of J as well so children can compare the two hooks.
- Why do some children draw L backwards?
- They have not yet fixed which way the foot points. Color the foot in a bright color and tell them it points toward the right, the direction a reader moves.
- Where does the tongue go for the /l/ sound?
- Have the child touch the tongue to the ridge behind the top teeth and say la, la, la. Lion, leaf, lamp and lemon make good practice words.
- Is L a good first letter to color?
- Yes. It has only two lines and one corner, so it is quick to finish. That early win builds confidence before more complex letters like K or M.
