Letter H Coloring Page
Letter H Coloring Page prints a large capital H, two tall posts joined by a short crossbar, with bubbles drifting around it. Teachers use it for the letter of the week, and parents use it for a child learning the breathy /h/ sound in hat, house and horse.
About this page
Printing helpShow the child how H is built: two straight lines down, and a bridge across the middle. Coloring takes about ten minutes. Ask them to color the bridge in a different color from the posts. Then say /h/ with a hand held up to the mouth to feel the puff of air. Say /h/ with your hand in front of your mouth and feel the puff of air. Press New version for another copy, or keep a few for a cut-and-paste H collage.
H has only straight lines and two clear parts, which makes it one of the easiest capitals for young hands. The usual error is placing the crossbar too high or too low, or forgetting it. Coloring teaches the bar sits in the middle of the posts. It is also a good letter for talking about symmetry, since the left and right sides match. I comes next.
Offer crayons to the youngest, and let older preschoolers use markers. A good variation is coloring the two posts in the same color and the bar in another, to show the symmetry. For a class, print H for a Hello wall and let each child color one, then tape them together.
- Why is H good for talking about symmetry?
- Fold the page down the middle of the letter and the two sides match. Ask the child to point to what is the same on the left and right.
- How do I get a child to hear the breathy /h/?
- Have the child hold a hand in front of the mouth and say hat, hop and ham. They should feel a puff of air. Mirror work, watching the open mouth, also helps.
- My child puts the H crossbar at the top. What helps?
- Trace the crossbar on a finished H with a finger and say it goes in the middle. Coloring that bar in a different color from the posts shows where it belongs.
